When I’m not slinging servers around with reckless abandon, my favorite thing to do is stop pucks. I played for the UGA Ice Dogs from 2003-2007 competing against rival schools such as Georgia Tech, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, etc. These days I’m playing in the “beer leagues” of Atlanta, which I’m told is at the highest levels of competitive hockey (now that the NHL is locked out).
While playing at Georgia, word got out that I’m openly gay, and that it was essentially a non-issue for my teammates. I’m pretty amazed at the response to the stories that broke. I received hundreds of emails, all but 1 were very positive and encouraging. It was a pleasant surprise, as I anticipated the worst at every step of the process. Thankfully my teammates and coaches are great people, and have been nothing but encouraging and supportive, both on and off the ice. Show your support and buy a jersey – proceeds help offset player’s dues for ice time and travel expenses.
